marsh harrier printing

Beavering away at Marsh Harrier proofing. Determined to follow through on my woodcuts despite the fresh input from Welsh woodlands. The previous 2 woodcuts that I’d made printed fairly easily from the initial cut blocks. This one always seemed to need more adding to it. I was interested in manipulating the blocks in various ways anyway… treating the blocks more like monoprints… with wiping, scraping, blotting etc… All a bit head spinning… achieving something of what I was after on one layer but then losing it on the next. These various proofs were trying to get a good balance.

Goldfinches resumed

Getting back to goldfinches, as usual hard to pick up after weekend away from the work in hand. Getting something of the feel I was after by reverting to hand burnishing for the later layers. The press tends to flatten everything out and also pull ink off from the previous layer. The ‘noise’ from the cutting marks gradually increasing… but where I thought I’d wanted quite a clean ground I think it may be helping things…

Goldfinches on yellow horned poppy proof

just getting to a rough proof of the goldfinches before closedown… too heavy once the black goes on at the moment where it looked OK with the first 2 layers. In this photo the mid tone looks really bluey… some aberration of the iphone camera.
As yet I haven’t figured out how to sensibly upload the photos from the computer… crazy that it seems easier from the phone than from the pc…20120106-163057.jpg

Golden plover & Black-headed gulls proof

In fairly workman like mode… getting on with another woodcut. Wanting to get some kind of momentum with painting/cutting before settling to fiddling with the making of more finished versions. 20120105-155915.jpg

Marsh harrier proof

Cutting one of the blocks to get the feel of how they would look once printed. Vaguely planning to later use some texture to vary the flat surface… wiping, scraping, blotting … Keeping to the monochrome to avoid getting sidetracked into colour confusion.
After a period before christmas of getting mired in processes, fairly keen to keep things simple and just produce some images related to recent sightings.
